Manual Arts High School Parent Center
Parent and community involvement is a required (per NCLB) and an important part of increasing student achievement. This proposal will describe the steps to create a parent center that is focused upon student achievement in fulfillment of the schools’ mission and vision (see appendix).
Research has identified four areas of parent and community involvement for effective schooling (Marzano, 2003):
• Communication
• Participation
• Education
• Governance
• Home environment
Communication
The parent center has implemented several methods to enhance good communication. For example, it has enhanced its manual phone calling to a few parents to include automated calls to reach all parents regarding school events on a weekly basis. Overall the school has worked at providing an atmosphere in which parents can come to the school and receive information as well as providing translation of documents and during meetings. Further activities will include
• a monthly mailing to parents of documents that will include but not limited to a parent center bulletin, school calendar, and updates from school offices.
• An email “blast” of school events
• An updated web page for the parent center and inclusion of parent center events on the school calendar.
• Supporting parent-teacher meeting
These activities will be organized and implemented by our parent/community representative.
Participation
Volunteering provides parents and community member an opportunity to participate in the day-to-day running of the school. Volunteers have helped the school in clerical, supervisorial and instructioanally as well. For example, some volunteers help prepare school mailings, others help supervise the school campus and others work in classrooms with teachers.
Additionally, per District policy, volunteers are scheduled to participate in specific support activities and not left idle in the parent center.
These events will be coordinate by our community representative, Ms. Jackson. Education
The parent center will implement the following research based activities to improve our volunteer program:
• Recruiting and training techniques
• Orientation workshops
• Staff training on appropriate volunteer use
Additionally, the parent center provides workshops on a variety of topics to parents such as nutrition, how to deal with domestic violence or how to discipline teenage children.
These workshops will be organized by our community representative, Ms, Valenzuela.
Governance
Manual Arts currently has parents participating in the governance of the school through various councils and committees such as the School Site Council, the Shared Decision Making Council, the CEAC and ELAC. The parent center works with the established councils, committees and SLCs to support parent participation.
Home Environment
Our parent center is to be focused upon improving student achievement, per our mission and vision. To support the home environment in increasing student achievement the school provides research based workshops and other educational opportunities.
