What Students need to know about 'service learning':

  • - Service learning is a Los Angeles Unified School District graduation requirement for all LAUSD high school seniors to complete in order to receive a diploma
  • Service learning is not community service - (80 hours of community service is our local Manual Arts High School graduation requirement)
  • All small learning communities (SLCs) and the College Preparatory Magnet have created at least one service learning project for their students to participate in
  • Most students complete their service learning requirement in the 11th grade. Some 9th and 10th graders have already completed this requirement. 12th graders must complete this requirement to receive a diploma.
  • Many community partners have developed service learning projects for students to elect to participate in
  • As major scholarship organizations look for students who have completed 100s of community service hours, so also universities and colleges are looking for high school graduates who have participated in several service learning opportunities.

    As MAHS Service Learning Lead, Mr. Keith oversees two on-going service learning projects for students from all grades (9th - 12th) on all tracks to participate in. Upon receiving a "Certificate of Completion" for the learning project, students may continue earning community service hours each semester thereafter. Several 9th graders are participating in these projects and potentially will have 4 years of community service participation by the time they graduate.

    "Homelessness Has No Borders"

    "Homelessness Has No Borders" is an on-going learning project that focuses on the history of homelessness in Los Angeles as well as in other parts of the world... and begins to address the question: What can we in Los Angeles do if we find somebody (a friend, a relative, our self) without a home?;
    To be able to answer that question, you might want to: Investigate the history and causes of homelessness in Southern California;
    Then Volunteer by serving breakfast, lunch and/or dinners to families living at the Union Rescue Mission (the oldest institution in Los Angeles helping the homeless since 1880's);
    Interview at least one worker and one homeless individual attending URM;
    Participate in community events related to homelessness or shelter programs such as canvasing attendees at the 19th Annual Conference on Hunger and Homelessness - hosted by the University of Southern California;
    And having done the first steps, then: Email, mentor, encourage and build new friendships with young people living in the shelters of Ministerios de Amor a 20 year old program founded by Ms. Cecilia Blanchet Pezet - with shelters in Mexico City, Cuernavaca, Monterrey and Guadalajara, Mexico.

    Recently, Mr. Tim DiScipio, co-founder of ePALS.com - the school email server in over 190 countries... was interested with our project on homelessness,
    ... and Mr. DiScipio was impressed to visit with several of the nearly 100 learning project participants in the College Prep Magnet Office and hear first hand from our Manual Arts students.
    Luis Cordova of Mission College oversees Community College students from his school and students at California State University - Northridge and Dominguez Hills who are also participating in "Homelessness Has No Borders".

    "TEEN COURT"

    Is the young person guilty or innocent? You - the students of "TEEN COURT" decide.

    Under the skillful leadership of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Sotelo, Mr. Preston Hopson, Associate - O'Melveny & Myers Law firm, and DPO Michelle Madrigal, Los Angeles County Probation Department... and approximately 40 MAHS students,

    ... "TEEN COURT" is held one Wednesday a month after school from 3:15pm to 5:15pm in Wilson Hall (Room 175) to hear and adjudicate actual misdemeanor cases.

    To meet the Service learning requirements of "TEEN COURT" and receive a "Certificate of Completion", students must:

    1. Attend at least 3 sessions and be seated on at least 3 jurys.
    2. Invite a friend to attend.
    3. Interview Judge Sotelo or any of the attending attorneys
    4. Write a "reflection" on your "TEEN COURT" experience.

    9th and 10th grade students (especially those who are interested in professions related to the law and criminal justice) are encouraged to attend as often as possible.

    Students must sign up in Room 237 in order to attend "TEEN COURT"

    If you have a specific question regarding your child and completing the Service Learning requirement, please contact your child's counselor in the appropriate Track Center. Thank you!
